What the rules say

Hot tubs used by paying guests are a known legionella risk. HSE guidance HSG282 covers domestic-style tubs used by a business, including holiday rentals, and sets out what HSE expects. You also need a written risk assessment and a written plan for how the tub is managed.

What to do

  1. Check pH and disinfectant at least twice a day while the tub is in use, and log the readings.
  2. Drain, clean and refill every week, or after each group of guests if sooner.
  3. Send a water sample to a UKAS-accredited lab every month for microbiological testing.
  4. Test for legionella at least every 3 months.
  5. Clean filters to the manufacturer's schedule and keep every record.

Tips from the field

  • Many hot tub servicing firms offer a monthly package that covers the sampling.
  • Give guests simple rules: shower first, time limits, no glass.
