Fire extinguishers and fire blankets

A fire blanket in the kitchen is the usual minimum. Extinguishers depend on your assessment.

What the rules say

For small self-catering lets, the GOV.UK guide says you may wish to provide a small extinguisher and a fire blanket in the kitchen. Guests are expected to get out, not fight fires, so don't over-equip.

What to do

  1. Fit a fire blanket near (not over) the hob.
  2. If you provide extinguishers, either have them serviced every year or use sealed maintenance-free units and replace them on time.
  3. Check they are still there, and the pins and seals are intact, at each changeover.
