ICO data protection fee

If you keep guest details on a computer or phone, you probably need to pay the ICO each year.

Applies to: Most hosts who store guest data electronically or use cameras such as video doorbells.

What the rules say

Organisations that process personal data must pay the ICO a data protection fee unless they are exempt. Holding guest names, contact details and passport information for your guest register usually counts.

What to do

  1. Take the ICO's self-assessment to check if you need to pay.
  2. Register and pay. One fee covers your whole business, so add this to just one property.
  3. Record the renewal date here.

Tips from the field

  • Only keep passport details as long as you need to (12 months for the guest register).
  • Mention any exterior cameras in your listings. Airbnb bans indoor cameras.
